How Renew Home helps you save

We partner with home device brands to embed intelligent energy features into their product experiences. Like Energy Shift, which can automatically help reduce usage and shift energy use to cheaper and cleaner times.2

Right now, we power Nest Renew on Nest thermostats — and we'll be adding more devices soon.

How Energy Shift works

In a nutshell, it can automatically adjust how and when devices in your home use energy.1 For example, it can adjust your thermostat so your AC or furnace uses less energy when it's most expensive, helping you save while keeping you comfortable.

Soon, you can also opt into Rewards Shifts.2 Get rewards from your energy provider for participating in larger, less frequent shifts when the grid is especially stressed.

What does "cheaper and cleaner" mean?

Energy prices can vary depending on the time of day (these are called "time-of-use" rates). So we can help shift your energy use to when rates are cheaper.

But how clean the energy is on your local grid changes too. Weather can reduce output from clean sources like wind and solar farms. Or, at times of extreme demand, energy providers may have to turn on additional fossil fuel power plants.

So Energy Shifts can help you save, and your actions could have a positive impact. No work required.

Does it cost me anything?

It won't cost you any extra to use our platform with compatible devices. If millions of homes choose to shift energy when the grid is stressed, energy providers don't need to build as many new power plants. You get smart energy features and help saving, and energy providers support Renew Home so you don't have to. Everybody wins.

Can I still control my devices?

Yes. Renew is here to help you save and it works automatically, with your permission, to make it easy. But you have full control of your devices. It’s all based on your preferences, and you're never locked out from making changes.

Can I track my energy savings?

Yes, soon! You will be able to link your energy provider account to see our estimates of how your energy savings add up over time. Plus, you'll get easy-to-understand home energy and impact insights, all in one spot.2

Product features will be available later in 2025.

Does this only work with Nest thermostats?

Yes, for the moment. We started with Nest thermostats, but will begin expanding to other smart devices throughout the home.

  1. Adjustments are primarily designed to shift the timing of electricity usage from your heating and cooling, but these shifts typically result in net energy savings. Savings from prioritizing cheaper energy are only available for customers on certain electric utility time-of-use rates.
  2. Available in eligible areas with participating utilities or energy providers. These features are in development and subject to change. Individual feature names within partner programs will vary. We plan to make them available later in 2025.
